As I prepare for labour, one of the ways I’m grounding myself emotionally is by creating a familiar, calm environment through scent. Essential oils have been part of my pregnancy journey—supporting rest, emotional balance, and connection. So naturally, they’re also part of the space I’ve created for birth.

The Blend: Clary Sage + Lavender + Frankincense
This trio has supported me through the final weeks of pregnancy and is part of the emotional toolkit I’ve been using to prepare for labour—physically, mentally, and energetically.
Clary Sage – The Oil of Clarity & Intuition
A powerful ally in birth prep. Clary sage supports uterine tone and emotional release—helping the body relax into its natural rhythm. It’s also deeply connected to inner wisdom, helping me feel more in tune with my instincts.
(Important note: I only began using clary sage from 37 weeks onward. I always recommend that anyone using Clary Sage in late pregnancy does so mindfully—and ideally, with guidance from a midwife or experienced aromatherapist.)
Lavender – The Oil of Calm & Reassurance
Lavender offers that soft, familiar sense of comfort. It soothes the nervous system, eases fear, and promotes rest between surges. This oil has been with me through early motherhood, and it feels like an old friend now.
Frankincense – The Oil of Sacred Presence
Frankincense anchors this blend with depth and grace. It supports breath, trust, and spiritual connection, helping me stay grounded and calm in the unknown.
How I’m Using These Oils:
Diffuser Blend for Early Labour at Home:
- 2 drops Clary Sage
- 2 drops Lavender
- 2 drops Frankincense
(A soft, grounding scent to create an emotionally safe space.)
Labour Mist Spray (for travel or hospital):
- 6 drops Lavender
- 4 drops Clary Sage
- 4 drops Frankincense
- Splash of witch hazel + distilled water in a 50ml amber spray bottle
(Spritz onto a flannel or in the room when I need a reset.)
Roller Blend (for sacrum, ankles, or wrists):
- 3 drops Clary Sage
- 2 drops Lavender
- 2 drops Frankincense
- Top with fractionated coconut oil in a 10ml roller bottle
Why I Chose This Blend
Creating a calm, emotionally supportive environment helps me feel safe and anchored during labour. These oils aren’t here to “fix” anything—they’re here to hold space, to remind me of all the work, preparation, and trust I’ve built along the way.
It’s my way of saying: I’m ready. I’m safe. I’m supported.
